Health Equity Initiatives (HEI)
HEI’s mission is to promote and protect the health rights of marginalized communities. It was founded in 2007 by a husband and wife team with experience in the health field who recognized a gap in health services to marginalized individuals. HEI currently has a case capacity of 180 individuals and does outreach work to over 1500 people per year. They work primarily with refugees and asylum seekers from Myanmar, Iran, Sri Lanka, Syria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
Most refugees hope for resettlement in a third country such as America, Australia, or the UK. They will need skills to succeed once they reach there. Volunteers can assist in these ways:
- Provide a practical knowledge class to the refugees in the areas of sewing, knitting, or cooking. These skills could help a person find a job in their new country.
- Help teach budgeting skills so that a person is able to understand how to wisely spend a paycheck.
- Provide a lesson on basic hygiene such as correct hand washing or food cleaning to help a person keep a job in a restaurant.
- Share every day pieces of information such as traffic/pedestrian rules or simply have light conversation to improve English skills.
